Artistic Director Job Description

RESPECT is seeking an Artistic Director for our educational theatre company, which offers a catalog of 14 programs addressing bullying, child abuse, dating violence, and mental health, as well as a selection of workshops and digital content. This is a great opportunity for an individual who can work with a flexible schedule, both independently and collaboratively, using their artistic and administrative talents to make a difference in the lives of thousands of individuals—from preschool age through adulthood—each year.

The RESPECT Artistic Director is responsible for casting and maintaining the artistic integrity of RESPECT productions in collaboration with other members of the RESPECT team. This includes managing rehearsals, supervising Actor Educators, and overseeing the artistic components of all programs. The Artistic Director also performs in select productions and leads workshops in an after-school club setting. This is a part-time position with an expectation of 15–20 hours per week and is supported by an additional Co-Artistic Director (6–8 hours per week).

 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts auditions and contributes to the hiring of Actor Educators
  • Schedules and plans rehearsals with the support of the Program and Development Manager
  • Direct rehearsals with the support of the Co-Artistic Director and complete rehearsal logs
  • Oversees Actor Educators (dress code, punctuality, and program logs, St. Timothy’s, etc.)
  • Provides notes and feedback as appropriate
  • Conducts yearly evaluations of Actor Educators with input of other administrative staff
  • Manages props, costumes, and educational materials with support from the Program and Development Manager
  • Manages sound system and technology with support from the Executive Director
  • Observes programming on a regular basis
  • Performing in educational plays and leading talkbacks as needed and to be discussed
  • Leading workshops, with particular emphasis on those in after-school club settings (Workshops are supported by the Education and Training Director)

 

Other Administrative Duties

  • Attends and participates in meetings such as, but not limited to: Community Advisory Committee, monthly staff meetings with the entire organization, weekly staff meetings, and various committee meetings
  • Other duties may be assigned

 

Experience & Requirements

  • Degree in Theatre or equivalent experience
  • Experience in Directing and Supervising
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Ability to work independently and complete work in a timely manner
  • Preferred But Not Required: Experience in Theatre for Social Change and/or Education

 

Compensation: $22.00/hour
